About the artist

Jazz Aline is an artist from Treaty 1, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Navigating artistic mediums like a river system, she recreates her dreams, experiences, stories, and views as they ought to be: deep like wild grass roots, and big like prairie skies.

She records her surroundings like a historian, remembering and reimagining the faces of our landscapes for present, past, and future revision. A gift of remembering through artistic language and renditions of her folklore for the 21st century.

About visual art

This one hit me right in the heart. I was almost breathless creating this piece of art and having it represent this story.

I know this river. I’ve spent years sitting on its banks, observing how the river flows eternally, the stories it hides in its muddy waters. Smiling as I watch the fog dance across its dark waters while the sun rises.

Stories are never lost. They are only buried until they’re ready to be shared. I don’t know if it’s possible to give voice to the stories of the people at the bottom of the Red River in an art form like mine, but I tried my best.

This story and this drawing brought tears to my eyes. If not this image, this play will put you in the arms of the river to tell you a beautiful and tragic story of the past, present, and future.
